What The Sidewalk Offered

Blonde haired youth ruffled split-ends spoke for frays.
-Grainy extremities tossed a Sunday school folder
Where it landed alongside a sewer grate. For weeks
Precipitation saturated the yellow paper,
Until corners rippled like crests in a splotch of lotion.

To dictate power
I pushed a floating gnat
Into my computer monitor.

Their polka-dot appearance
Convalesced a distraction.
(and I pretended
That death was invented
To avoid the annoyance
Of immortal company)

A Sunday school folder found sanctuary
Near a sewer grate. It shared space
With a syringe, half a Styrofoam cup,
And echoing footsteps
That never bothered to discover
What’s inside.
