Requiem for Natural Reactions

th

When newscasters interview
Survivors
Or witnesses
Or relatives
Or police chiefs
Involved with misfortune
Their body language defies instinct.
Instead their plastic features
Are groomed to melt wrinkles
And anchor eyebrows
While their earpiece vibrates
As the producer’s caterwaul reverberates
Like a thousand sheets of cardboard
Erected like American flags
Posted in protest
Against the wind.

For the slightest ting
Interrupting an orchestral crescendo
Sings louder
Than pitch perfect
Syncopation.
