Nothing Happens to The Dead

A newborn clutches her twin who died in utero
While exiting the birthing canal-
Doctor plucks her fingers
Snapping them like a Kit-Kat.

Tears react
But to which pain?

Broken fingers?

A dispute about body language
Relevant to the orator’s
Eyewitness recollection
Of textbook fame…
Father claims:
“We’re human we rehearsed this.”
As he illustrates reasoning
Mother studies the slits
On his chapped lips…
“It hurts so, physically.”
Mother claims.
“That’s because the stillborn
Is calcified. It tore everything.”
Doctor explains.

The dead allow everything
To happen.
And nothing happens
To the dead.
